Spring is here

Life is returning to our gardens.

March and early April are a great time to prepare gardens for the spring and summer.

Now is the time to plant

  • Summer flowering bulbs, ideal for a cutting bed.

  • Seed potatoes for a bumper crop of spuds

  • Rhododendrons and Azalea for a mass of spring blooms

  • Alpines  to bring something special to pots and dryer corners of the garden

  • Fruits trees and bushes for a crop this year.

We can till get frosts in the pennine parts of Huddersfield well into early April, so if planting more tender plants such as bedding keep an eye on weather forecasts and if a sharp frost is expected remember to protect them.

Birds are returning and nesting ready for the spring breeding season, so now is an important time to feed them.

CONTAINERS ADD INTEREST TO THE GARDEN

Containers are a great way of show casing a plant, growing a shrub where there is no soil and of allowing you to move your plants around so those that are in flower are most prominent.

Plants grown in containers need less weeding and routine maintenance, though they do need watering in dry spells and feeding.

Our range of containers goes from the small to the large statement pieces, all at good value prices.

we currently have:

  • Wooden half whiskey barrels ( ideal for water features or a statement display

  • traditional terracotta, from plant pots to large urns

  • glazed pots in a variety of sizes and colours

  • salt glazed pots, typically mid sized and larger pots

  • Fibre clay; lighter and easier to carry

  • Plastic, including some decorative plastic. lightweight and long lasting.

GROW  YOUR OWN VEG.

Potatoes are easy grow.

the best tasting potatoes are the ones you have grown yourself.   they don't have to take up a lot of space, they can be grown in large containers, towers made of old car tyres or the usual way in beds in the ground.

Normally planted as the soil begins to warm as winter ends in March & April many growers get an early start by planting in containers.

Potatoes are grown from seed potatoes planted in well dug and fertilised soil. we have a wide rnage of different types of  seed potatoes to suit all tastes.
